Jack White, never content to just let music be music, has added to his list of insane things he hopes to do with vinyl. The musician, who recently released a basically unplayable 3 RPM album, has announced that he hopes to be the person to play the first vinyl record in outer space. To which we say: Of course he does.

In his recent cover story for Interview magazine, White spoke with astronaut Buzz Aldrin, who was the second ever man to walk on the moon. White told Aldrin that he is working on a “secret project” that involves getting one of the songs on his Third Man Records label to be the “first vinyl record played in outer space.”

So does this mean that White is headed to space? Not exactly, although we wouldn’t put it past him. He told Aldrin that his plan is “to launch a balloon that carries a vinyl record player. And figure out a way to drop the needle with all that turbulence up there and ensure that it will still play.” We have no idea if this is possible in physical reality, but if there’s a will there’s a way, right?

White also spoke to Aldrin about the demise of The White Stripes, noting that his recent solo effort, Blunderbuss, wouldn’t have been possible during the existence of the band. White said, “I didn’t want to go out and make solo records if The White Stripes still existed. I thought that people would be too confused by the two ideas and a lot of people wouldn’t be able to get their head around it. So, in a sense, it was something that was bound to happen one day. But I’m sad about it all the time.”

And what about a follow-up to Blunderbuss? White said, “We had enough for an album at one point, but I just kept going… I’ve got another 12 songs that I haven’t finished yet.”
